Designed to supersede the Spitfire and Hurricane, the final completion of the very first Typhoon took place on the day WWII was declared. It was specifically designed to be faster and carry heavier armament to satisfy the Ministries requirement for more intense fire power. The Typhoon was designed by the brilliant aircraft designer Sydney Camm. The Typhoon was powered by the ‘One Ton Monster’ the Napier Sabre engine. Unfortunately, the Sabre suffered terrible problems during its development programme, with the problems not being fully solved until the latter months of the war.

The painting was a commission, with the sky being used from a photograph taken by the person who commissioned the painting, from the flight deck of his airliner. I love the mystical, almost romantic atmosphere of morning and evening skies, with the enchanting beauty of the Salmon Pink under bellies of the clouds just catching the colour of the sun at that time of day.
