Well what a beautiful end to September! As I sit here at my computer looking over the pond with the Lincolnshire Lancaster Members Day at RAF Coningsby just round the corner in the next few days - Sunday 2nd October in fact.
It is a shame the weather couldn’t have been the same for the Goodwood weekend, although it didn’t deter the public attendance and made the car racing very interesting! Good to see eleven Spitfires in the air at the same time.
There seems to be a build up in interest in my motor car work from one year to the next, but this will certainly not detract from the aviation work I do. I have in my order book a major classic Bentley canvas (Avengers, if that helps) to do that will probably be based around an atmospheric ‘Old World’ workshop scene, or even a picnic scene including a dog of course.

The ‘Pulling Together’ canvas was commissioned by Vector Fine Art Prints, and has been published in print. The item was launched at Duxford during the September show, limited to an edition of 250. I was allocated a quantity of 125, full print sale details on website in nostalgia and Spitfire section.
The painting was certainly a learning curve for me. Every County has its own particular design of cart, and to cut a very long story short, I got it wrong from the start. I thought a cart was just a wooden bath tub with a wheel on each corner but nooooo. The Sussex cart design was Cobalt blue with red undercarriage and wheels. Twelve spokes in the front wheels, fourteen in the back, and so it goes on! There are approx. four cart paintings under the one you see. This was of course me trying to get it right and thankfully in the end I did.
A very interesting trip to a Heavy Horse Centre gave me plenty of on the spot references for the horse, (sorry, William) and another trip to meet up with a re-enactment group did nicely for the figure work. Unfortunately on the day only one person was available so my wife Carol was dressed up for the part and appears as the one steadying the horse.
This is what I love about this sort of work, no day is the same and these trips out are really good fun. I don’t know whether to admit this or not, but I now know more about hay carts than I do aeroplanes!
